Dwarf Sweet Flag has been available in the aquarium trade for a long time, but unfortunately, it is still often reported that, like the normal, taller Acorus gramineus, it is only suitable for aquariums to a limited extent or not at all – this is not true.
Acorus gramineus var. pusillus can certainly grow permanently submerged, but should be cultivated as an epiphyte.
The rhizome should therefore not be buried, but should be attached to wood or rocks in the aquarium. The plant will then attach itself with its roots.
In the aquarium, Acorus gramineus 'Pusillus' is slow-growing but forms extremely attractive, small, round clumps and reproduces by lateral rhizome runners.
It is a lush green, easy-care alternative to other grass-like bushes such as Blyxa japonica and similar plants and has sturdy leaves.
The standard, taller-growing form, Acorus gramineus, on the other hand, probably cannot be kept permanently in an aquarium, but is particularly suitable for paludariums, terrariums, or even Wabi Kusa.
