Potamogeton gayi is a narrow-leaved pondweed species from southern, non-tropical South America. As an underwater plant, it colonizes still and flowing waters.
This ornamental pondweed has been known for many years as an undemanding, fast-growing aquarium plant and can also cope well with harder and cool water (it is therefore also suitable for cold water aquariums). Unfortunately, Potamogeton gayi has been somewhat forgotten in recent years and is rarely found in stores.
Potamogeton gayi, like most other Potamogeton species, also develops thin, creeping rhizomes in the ground from which upright stems sprout at regular intervals. These can grow up to approx. 70-100cm long. They are soft, translucent and transparent and turn a very pretty green to orange-brown depending on the light intensity.
