The floating plant, also known as water lettuce, is suitable for larger, open aquariums to cover the water surface as well as for garden ponds or smaller container ponds. The matt light green, rosette-like plants can reach diameters of up to 20cm.

Propagation occurs through numerous small new plants that grow in a circle around the mother plant. The water lily can therefore spread very quickly.

With its velvety soft leaves, it probably comes from the tropics/subtropics (but this is still not clear) and is now widespread worldwide.
Since August 2024, Pistia stratiotes has been considered an invasive species in the EU; keeping, propagating, passing on and importing the water lily is therefore prohibited.
