Nymphoides aquatica, also known as water banana or banana plant, is an extremely adaptable solitary plant that is often the focus of planting.

It comes from the USA and owes its curious name to the banana-shaped storage tubers at the root. From the middle of the plant between these storage tubers, even longer roots sprout, with which the plant also grows into the ground.

The banana-shaped storage tubers of Nymphoides aquatica play an important role in the health and growth of the plant.
These should not be digged into the gravel as they are responsible for storing nutrients and thus enable the plant to survive unfavorable conditions for long periods of time.
Therefore, the storage nodules need direct access to water with some current. Burying them would cause the storage tubers to rot and thus damage the entire plant.

Floating leaves that occasionally appear can simply be snapped off if you don't want them. This means the bushy, compact growth is preserved under water.
Newly formed leaves are often light green-reddish with a beautiful, structured pattern that is darker in color.
