Microsorum pteropus, the Java fern, grows in countless places in tropical and subtropical Asia from Pakistan to India, Thailand and Indonesia to Japan.
There it grows on rock or wood and occurs in streams and waterfalls, but can also be found on drier sandy soil.
This fern is very easy to keep in the aquarium and does not require any special requirements. It can also tolerate strong currents and frequent changes in water level and is therefore often used as a plant in paludariums.
Like all ferns or epiphytes, this fern should not be planted in the ground; it is best tied to root wood or porous stones.
Since the last few years, many variants of the Microsorum have been available for aquarium keeping, including narrow-leaved variants such as M. pteropus 'Philippine', small variants such as M. pteropus short narrow leaf and completely new variants such as the strikingly leafed Microsorum pt. Lion Fish.
