Tonina fluviatilis is the only species in the genus Tonina. Previously circulating varieties such as Tonina sp. ‘Belem’ or Tonina sp. ‘Manaus’ were identified several years ago as Syngonanthus species and therefore do not belong to the genus Tonina.

It originates from Central America, northern South America, and is also found on some Caribbean islands. There, it grows in slow-flowing waters and prefers soft, slightly acidic water.

It is a very beautiful, rare plant, but naturally not easy to care for. It requires CO2, plenty of light, and iron fertilizer. The addition of micronutrients and trace elements (e.g., VIMI Trace) is also very beneficial to its growth.
