The heart-leaf water lily is one of the more robust Cryptocoryne species and has been known as an aquarium plant in Europe for decades. It is currently only found in nature on the northern west coast of Sumatra.

It is unproblematic to keep in an aquarium and (after a certain acclimatization period) is very adaptable.
Soft or hard water is well tolerated with a wide range of pH values. Stronger lighting naturally results in a bushy, compact appearance.

With its often slightly wavy and hammered leaves, C. pontederiifolia is an excellent choice for the middle or background, where it can show off its light green on the top and sometimes slightly purple on the bottom.
With each new leaf, a lower leaf is also formed, which further enhances the denser, bushy growth.
