Bogwood has a very positive effect on aquarium water parameters. Small amounts of humic acid are released, slightly softening and acidifying the water, which noticeably increases spawning readiness and the overall well-being of fish. Bogwood is often used as a hiding place and resting spot (e.g., during spawning) and is indispensable for fish such as suckermouth catfish.

Unfortunately, genuine bogwood is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.

This is because fewer and fewer bogwood sources are being unearthed, and almost exclusively "light-colored (Chinese) bogwood" is offered, which has never actually been found in a bog. These light-colored, so-called bogwood roots are usually dried roots of azaleas or rhododendrons from Asia. Therefore, these roots cannot possess the beneficial properties of genuine, dark, and moist bogwood.

Light-colored bogwood roots are also a beautiful decoration for aquariums and terrariums and are, of course, indispensable in the hobby. However, we would like to inform you about the significant difference between these two types of roots.

Bogwood roots are very well suited for setting up shrimp and crayfish aquariums, as leaves, twigs, and roots are abundant in the natural environment of these animals. Shrimp readily accept the roots and congregate on them in large numbers. Mosses and ferns can be easily placed on them and will grow quickly.

Please do not boil bogwood! This would destroy the biochemical balance in the wood.

The roots will be delivered to you moist and tightly packaged. Soak the roots for 48 hours, changing the water several times during this period.
